Adult Acne
Adult acne is not uncommon and is often related to genetics, as well as stress and hormonal changes. A good skin care routine is important to gently cleanse and nourish oily, congested skin predisposed to acne. At Spring Skin we also offer a number of treatment modalities that help to calm and control acne prone skin.
Solutions we offer:
- Broad Band Light (BBL): This light based therapy can help cull the bacteria that subtend acne while reducing sebum production and pore size. Any inflammatory discolouration (reds or browns) around chronic acne sites will also be corrected. These BBL sessions can also be combined with our Clarifying HF facials.
- Micro-infusion Gold: This gentle, micro-needling treatment is ideal for mild to moderate acne. Dr vanVliet customizes the therapeutic cocktail infused into your skin to help reduce sebum production and the occurrence of acne flares. It is also wonderful for reducing the size of your pores!
- Clinical Peels: We offer up a series of anti-inflammatory and calming clinical peels to help reduce the severity and frequency of acne flares – these include our Salicylic clinical peels as well as HydraFacial MD clarifying facials.
- Photo-dynamic therapy (PDT): is a powerful acne treatment to help control more recalcitrant and severe acne flares. This treatment combines the topical application of Levulinic acid with a Light therapy session. Down-time approximates 1-2 weeks.
Face
Acne / Facial Scars
Acne scars are often a painful reminder of uncontrolled acne flares of our past. Issues of skin contour, texture and discolouration are usually of prime concern. The textural issues can be unsightly and difficult to cover up with makeup. At Spring Skin we offer a number of solutions to help smooth your skin back to a more normal texture and improved colour.
Solutions we offer:
- Micro-needling: This is the most powerful modality we have for helping improve texture and tone of facial skin with acne scarring. Treatment sessions can be combined with PRP infusion and a series of at 4 to 6 treatments is strongly recommended to optimize skin smoothing and brightening effects.
- Micro-infusion Gold: This micro-needling treatment can help smooth the texture of acne scarring by inciting collagen remodelling plus also infusing skin with hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump the skin. A series of 3-5 sessions is recommended.
- Broad Band Light (BBL) treatments can help correct the discolouration often associated with acne scars. Inflammatory reds and pigments can be targeted while also tightening the skin and reducing pore size.

Redness / Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin that primarily affects fair skinned individuals of Northern European heritage. It starts in adulthood and in its milder expression it simply presents as a ruddy, red complexion. When symptoms are more severe it can inflame and congest the skin and cause acne flares and textural thickening and scarring. Men with severe rosacea often develop rhinophyma, a condition where the nose becomes congested, bulbous and discoloured.
Solutions we offer:
- BBL: Broad band light can help make significant inroads towards improving rosacea prone skin by targeting the underlying cause – too many vessels! This highly tuneable light treatment can target the vessels and inflammatory reds that subtend rosacea while improving skin health and appearance. A series of 4-6 treatments is usually required to exact initial correction. Once corrected, 1 to 2 maintenance treatments annually are recommended to help control your rosacea and maintain skin health. The silver lining of these maintenance BBL treatments goes well beyond controlling your rosacea – it also helps to tighten and smooth your skin while slowing down the aging process of your skin.
- HydraFacial MD clarifying peel: We offer soothing, anti-inflammatory clinical peels to help calm and settle congested and inflamed rosacea prone skin
- Topical cosmeceuticals: Rosacea prone skin is quite sensitive and fragile so a good home skin care regimen is integral to keeping skin calm, clear and healthy.

Pigment / ‘Aging’ Spots
It’s inevitable that we accumulate some sun or ‘aging’ spots over time, especially if we are fair and we enjoy our time in the outdoors. The spots that accumulate over time are a response to chronic UV exposure. Their presence has little to do with our chronological age and every thing to do with our sun exposure habits over time.
A recent Proctor and Gamble Beauty study concluded that age spots do in fact “age” us – more than fine lines and wrinkles do. This study concluded that aging spots can make a person look as much as 10-20 years older than their chronological age.
The presence of pigmented debris in our skin not only makes us look older but it is often a marker for damaged DNA in our skin cells and dis-ease in the skin. They can also be associated with more severe skin concerns on the pre-cancerous and skin cancer spectrum. The good news is that much of this accumulated pigment and debris is in fact both reversible and preventable. Recent technological innovations have made it possible to selectively cull a large burden of our sun spots as well as any associated DNA damage in our skin cells. Dr vanVliet will help you understand what treatments will best help address your skin concerns and will guide you to a healthier, less spotted version of yourself.
Treatments we offer:

- Surgitron removal of ‘Aging” spots: Some ‘aging spots’ referred to as Seborrheic keratoses are elevated and not responsive to topical (ex. liquid nitrogen ) or Laser and Light based therapies. These respond best to surgical removal and Dr vanVliet utilizes a specialized radio frequency probe to precisely shave them off with minimal risk of scarring or of recurrence.
- HydraFacial MD: We can customize your HydraFacial treatment with Boosters to target both reds and browns and to help brighten the skin.

- Topicals: The best way to prevent the accumulation of sun spots and pigment (including sun damage/ skin cancer) is to embrace the use of physical UV blockade (clothing, hats) and topical Broad spectrum SPF of at least a 45 rating. The use of oral and topical anti-oxidants ( vitamin C&E) also helps keep skin bright and protected against UV damage. Retinol treatment at night helps with repair, skin health and stabilization of pigment cells.

Wrinkled / Lax Skin:
The development of fine lines and wrinkles as we age is multifactorial. The three big contributors to facial wrinkles are:
- Dynamic lines: These wrinkles and fine lines are related to how we animate and to underlying muscle activity. Wrinkles surrounding the eyes (glabellar, forehead, crow’s feet) and the mouth most often develop as a result of repetitive underlying muscle activity.
- Lines related to sun /UV damage: This relates to how chronic sun exposure deleteriously impacts our skin envelope. The extent and depth of wrinkling and loss of elasticity are based on how much sun exposure you have had in your life time. UVA rays are responsible for much of the damage and breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres that lie in the deeper layer of the skin dermis. The end result here is skin that becomes lined, lax and rough in texture.
Age related wrinkles : Deflation and descent of our soft tissue envelope occurs naturally with age. Skin does thin with time and this can contribute towards laxity and deflation. As well, we lose bone stock and fat pads in our facial architecture over time – this means less buttressing and support for the overlying skin envelope and subsequent deflation and descent of our skin envelopes.

Given that the development of wrinkles and fine lines is multi-factorial it stands to reason that a multi-faceted approach towards their management is key. Dr vanVliet believes in combining treatment modalities to make incremental changes that work synergistically to give you the most natural resolution of problematic lines. Her approach targets all causes of wrinkling (dynamic lines, volume depletion and UV damage) and she tailors her treatments accordingly:
- Injectables: Lines of animation around the eyes and mouth related to muscle activity can be easily modulated with the use of Neurotoxins such as Botox or Dysport. Dr vanVliet does all of her own injectables and she is conservative with her use of Toxins so that lines can be softened without making you look frozen or overdone.
- She also chooses from a wide array of HA based dermal fillers from the Restalyn, Juvederm and Teoxane families of dermal fillers. They differ in their viscosities and properties and she carefully selects and combines them to have you looking naturally your best. Some HA fillers are thin and used superficially in the dermal layers of the skin to address dynamic and fine lines. Others are more viscous and designed to lift and buttress in regions of fat pad / bone resorption where structural support for the skin envelope has been lost. - Silhouette Instalift: Deflation and descent of our facial tissue is inevitable with aging. Restoration of volume with HA fillers can help ameliorate some of the descent but sometimes the tissues simply need to be lifted and redistributed to where they once were. Silhouette InstaLift is a non-surgical face and neck lift procedure that can safely and effectively restore a more youthful and refreshed facial contour!
- Broad Band Light (BBL): This medical grade Light based technology is wonderful for imparting colour correction to the skin (pigment and reds) but it can also be tuned to target the deep dermis to tighten and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
- Skin Tightening (RF) with our Pelleve utilizes radio-frequency waves to precisely target the collagen and elastin fibres of the deep dermis. Sun-damaged skin includes some or all of the following skin changes:

Chronic sun exposure over the years sets us up for cumulative skin damage. You do not require referral by your Family Physician for this initial assessment.

Lip rejuvenation:

If you have moles, skin tags, aging spots or cysts that you find troublesome or unsightly, we can set up a private consultation with Dr vanVliet for your initial assessment. You do not require referral by your Family Physician for this initial assessment.
MSP does not fund the surgical excision of cosmetic skin lesions for aesthetic purposes. Dr vanVliet will tailor a customized treatment plan for you and discuss the associated fees at the time of your initial consultation.
